An encouraging piece for we shooting enthusiasts aired on The Today Show recently, and it’s a must see if you’re looking to have a brighter day.
As some of you already know, I’m happy to take part in this segment by NBC’s widely viewed morning show. Sharing the positive reality about shooting is exactly why I started all this. Though the opportunity was not without risk, the Today Show’s audience is full of people who might not otherwise get a chance to see another side of the story. And that, my friends, is worth the risk.
But here’s what most people don’t realize:
As with most shows, once the footage is filmed, the producers can cut it however they want, and The Today Show can comment on it however they wish. This can actually change the reality of the story. Yet they cut and shared it with integrity.
That’s why this piece is particularly encouraging. Behind the scenes Ronan Farrow (the reporter)

and all of us had a great time on the range. And although this piece highlighted the more controversial questions — most of that day was truly about exploration, camaraderie, and enjoyment together with firearms — not politics.
That doesn’t mean that we weren’t concerned that it might not be conveyed that way on screen. But, with many sighs of relief, this piece was cut with class, grace and fairness. Keep in mind that The Today Show has a lot of people who don’t understand our community yet, and this helps bridge that gap with tact.
And more than that, its pretty darn cool to finally have a mainstream news network cover how diverse we really are as a community and let us share our story. So before we jump into labeling and dividing, we should remember examples like this. Treat people with fairness and respect, and sometimes they may just return it to you.
So, Kudos to all involved for this refreshing piece on gun culture. I hope you are as encouraged as I am!
